Nick knocked on the doorframe of Samâs office. âHey, can I bug you a minute?â
She visibly sighed and closed the screen she was working on and turned her chair. âSure. Whoâs this?â
Nick looked at a recently shaved Davie then back at Sam. âDave Sangster, this is Sam. Sheâs the IT guru around here. Davieâs helping me out.â
âWhereâs his visitorâs pass? It needs to be displayed at all times and he needs to have an escort.â
âWe didnât stop by the front desk. Weâre just in here for a couple of minutes. Iâm escorting him.â
âJesus.â She stood and pushed her chair back. Grabbed Davie by the arm. âA visitor canât escort another visitor. You need to leave until youâve got the appropriate pass.â.
He pulled his arm free. âRelax. Weâll go get one now.â
âIâll be here whenever you get back.â
Davie followed Nick to the lift lobby. âSheâs a bit off.â
âYeah, that was my bad. I should have known better.â The doors opened on receptionâs floor. The three cars were still there.
âThese are nice,â said Davie. âVery, very nice.â
âNo time. Weâve got things to do.â Nick leaned on the front desk. âRemember me?â
âKirraâs pet. What can I do for you? Your pass not working?â
âNo, itâs fine.â He pulled Davie closer. âDavid Sangster. He works for me and needs the same access Kirra gave me.â
âWell, I can arrange floor access, but IT access will need to be handled byââ
ââby Sam. I know. We were just there. I let Davie tailgate me in and she almost ripped my head off.â
The receptionist laughed. âI donât see any bruises. You got off easy.â She held out her hand. âYour driverâs licence, Mr Sangster?â
He handed it over, then turned his back on the counter and admired the cars. âI could enjoy driving again, with one of these.â
âYou canât afford it, mate.â Nick collected the credentials from the receptionist and thanked her. He tapped Davie on the arm. âKeep these around your neck or youâll end up getting head butted by Sam.â
âThanks.â He grabbed them and put them on. He turned and smiled at the receptionist. âMy licence?â
She handed it back, and placed the palm reader on the counter. âPlace your hand here until the flashing red light turns green.â
He looked at Nick who nodded. âOkay.â
The light turned green and the receptionist retrieved the tablet. âGood to go.â
âThanks.â He fell in beside Nick. âWhat now?â
âDown three flights to level 10 and start over. Be nice to Sam, okay? Sheâs an old friend and can help us a lot.â He started down the stairs. âBut donât tell her what weâre up to. Iâm pretty sure weâre going to cross the line of legality.â
âWay across the line.â Davie looked at the two separate cards on the lanyard. âWhy two?â
âThe white one with the big red âVâ on it gets you in every floor except Level 16, the secure floor. The black one gets you on to 16.â
They walked down two flights before Davie talked again. âHow we going to do this?â
âGet Sam used to seeing you around.
