CHAPTER 26
I texted Danna from the store at seven that night.
How are you feeling?
Iâd sent her a message before I rode out to see Grant, simply telling her to rest and be well. Still, I had a restaurant to run, and another day like today would be brutal for Turner and me. I needed to know if I should rope in additional help.
Way good. Meds are working. See you in AM.
Awesome. Glad to hear it.
It really was good news. And I needed some after what Iâd learned from Grant. The two hours since then had been occupied with riding home and a quick, grocery-store take-out dinner with Abe before he left for banjo practice. Iâd then driven here to the store to do meal prep for tomorrow.
Now flour was on my hands and opera was on the speakers, which helped me to both work and think. I was yawning, too, so I needed to work quickly and get home to bed. Even if we did have all hands on deck tomorrow, any day in the restaurant tended to be hectic.
When my phone buzzed, I nearly ignored it. After I dusted off a hand and read the text, I smiled, hurrying to the door to unlock it.
âI bear gifts of sweetness,â Phil proclaimed, arms full of brownie-laden trays.
âI return gratitude.â I returned his smile, as well his flowery formality, and let him in.
âThat flour on your nose tells me I interrupted something.â He set down his trays. âCan I help?â
âAlways. First things first.â I opened the door to the walk-in. âLetâs stash those and get ourselves a drink. Tea and Four Roses?â
Phil held forefingers to temples. âMind meld.â
Two minutes later, he perched on a stool opposite me, rolling silverware while I cut butter into the biscuit dry ingredients.
âAny word on how Samuel is?â I asked. âI didnât get an update from Adele.â
âDoing better every day, thank the Lord.â
âIâm so glad.â
He finished a roll and lined up the silverware on another napkin. âDonât you think itâs kind of nuts for old people to go wandering around in the tropical wilderness?â
âDude, Mumbai might be tropical. But itâs so not wilderness. You know itâs a huge, modern city, right?â
âI guess.â He took a sip of his bourbon-laced tea. âWhatâs happening closer to home? I mean, with that ladyâs murder.â
âNothing, as far as I know.â I drank from my own mug. âIt seems to be a mess of past history, family resentments, maybe some financial wrongdoing. Hey, Phil?â
âYes?â
âWill you look something up for me?â I gestured toward his phone with my chin.
âSure. What?â
âCheck out a place called Ginnyâs Gobblers. A turkey farm.â
He laughed. âI donât have to do that. Itâs in Beanblossom. Your pal Martin owns it, the Mennonite dude. That is, his mother does. Sheâs Ginny. Why did you want to know?â
âNanette used to work there, a long time ago. Interesting. Iâll have to give Martin a call.â
âIs that guy involved in the murder? The one we were talking about the other dayâsomebody Gale?â
âKristopher Gale.
