Basketball was invented in the USA over 100 years ago.
A sports teacher called Dr James Naismith came up with the idea. He wanted an indoor game students could play in the school gym when it was snowy outside.
He hung peach baskets at the two ends of the gym. He gave his students a football to throw around. Basketball was born.
The first proper game took place on 21st December 1891. All the players were men. By the early 1900s, lots of women were playing too.
