“The following day I did noses, imitating De Virgilio’s style closely. I spent several days on lips, shoulders, paws, fur, gown, and so on. I forged the signature, over and over.”

Godoy paused. Somewhere a clock chimed three.

“A week later I began painting on canvases that were the same size as the original, and did ten copies. I aged the best one by making tiny cracks in the canvas, rubbing dirt into the cracks. I aged the wooden stretchers that held the canvas.

“Next to the true Mousa Lisa, my copy, although perfect, lacked a certain glow. Still, if I, the great art expert, said it was the original, who would doubt my word? I removed the frame from the original and framed the fake, which I crated. Then I rolled up the real painting.

“Putting everything I’d used into the suitcase, I heaved it overboard at midnight. Thus did I dispose of all clues. Two days later we landed.

“At Vera Cruz, the museum guards who met me patted the crate fondly, little dreaming that beneath my long, black cloak was the real Mousa Lisa, rolled up and strapped to my side.”
