A cervical collar can be built with a Sam Splint as indicated in figure 17. It may be improvised by placing sandbags on either side of the neck while the patient is still on the ground. If the victim is lying twisted around debris and in a dangerous location, she will have to be moved. The head will need to be supported by gentle hand traction, with the head and neck stabilized by one person, who will direct the actions of others helping to move the patient. The technique is called a “log roll” and is used to help examine the patient and to move her onto insulation or a stretcher.
