Gloves

Plastic apron or gown

Protective eyewear

Mask or respirator mask

Perform hand hygiene

Gloves are removed first as they are contaminated on their outer surface with the patient’s secretions and this manoeuvre then prevents you from touching and potentially infecting your own skin, eyes or mouth whilst removing the other contaminated items of PPE. See Figure 6.6 for glove removal technique. Gloves should be removed immediately after completing treatment even if other items of PPE are not removed to prevent contamination of inanimate surfaces in the surgery environment. Masks are removed by handling the ties or earpieces only. Dispose of single‐use PPE and RPE immediately into hazardous infectious clinical waste sacks. Reuseable items should be decontaminated.

Figure 6.6 Stages of aseptic glove removal to prevent contamination of the wearer’s hands and the environment.
