Chapter 8 In Pursuit of Justice
Maya, Ethan, and Lily arrived at the Sunridge Junction Police Station first thing the next morning.
âGood morning, Nellie,â Maya said, standing in front of the receptionist.
âMy goodness, the entire Thompson family. Why are you all here? Is Lily applying to the academy and following in her grandmotherâs footsteps?â Nellie started pulling out an application.
âAs much as Iâd be thrilled if she did, we are here to see Dr. Everett Frost. He was arrested yesterday evening under bogus charges.â Maya looked over at the door leading to the stationâs one jail cell.
âWe didnât make any arrests last night. Iâm the only one here this morning.â Nellieâs forehead creased as she looked at Maya.
âProfessor Frost could have been transported to the county lock-up.â Maya couldnât quite believe what she was hearing.
âNope, that didnât happen either.â Nellie looked through the paperwork.
âWhen is the chief due in?â Maya wasnât giving up.
âHeâs taking a few days off. Said he was traveling with the Mrs. to see her parents. Officer Kittery is on call since he, too, took the weekend off. Iâm holding down the fort by myself. Iâll let Chief Bobbette know you want to speak to him.â Nellie started jotting down a note to the chief.
âNo, please donât,â Ethan interjected, as they turned to leave. âLetâs just pretend we were never here.â
âIâm worried about Everett. I donât know who to trust anymore. Iâd say the chief and his grandson are knee deep in this whole plot to steal Dr. Frostâs invention.â Lily voiced what her father and grandmother had been thinking.
âThose blueprints are several years old, and technology has changed. Why are they so important now? Or was finding the blueprints a trick to flush out Everett?â Ethan posed the question.
Everyone sat silently for several minutes in Mayaâs SUV, thinking and trying to fit the puzzle pieces together.
âOfficer Kittery seemed to be waiting for us by the shed last night. Iâm going to call a friend of mine to do a sweep of my house and Marthaâs to see if there are any listening devices planted around. Iâll have her check everyoneâs phones and computers, too. The more I think about it, the more it seems like too much of a coincidence.â Maya picked up her cell and made the call.
âI say letâs get Digger, Dash, and Daisy and check out the fishing shack. Wouldnât that be a likely place to hold Everett captive? That way, they can make sure heâs working on the invention and then take possession of it as soon as it is finished. Everett did mention he was about ready to apply for a patent.â Ethan threw out the possibility.
âWe are treading on thin ice. We are about to take on the Sunridge Junction police chief and his grandson. The corruption may run deeper than that,â Maya said as she pulled into her garage.
âLetâs set a trap to expose the culprits. Maybe we can enlist Martha. I donât want her placed in a dangerous situation, though.
