Chapter 8 In Pursuit of Justice

Maya, Ethan, and Lily arrived at the Sunridge Junction Police Station first thing the next morning.

“Good morning, Nellie,” Maya said, standing in front of the receptionist.

“My goodness, the entire Thompson family. Why are you all here? Is Lily applying to the academy and following in her grandmother’s footsteps?” Nellie started pulling out an application.

“As much as I’d be thrilled if she did, we are here to see Dr. Everett Frost. He was arrested yesterday evening under bogus charges.” Maya looked over at the door leading to the station’s one jail cell.

“We didn’t make any arrests last night. I’m the only one here this morning.” Nellie’s forehead creased as she looked at Maya.

“Professor Frost could have been transported to the county lock-up.” Maya couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing.

“Nope, that didn’t happen either.” Nellie looked through the paperwork.

“When is the chief due in?” Maya wasn’t giving up.

“He’s taking a few days off. Said he was traveling with the Mrs. to see her parents. Officer Kittery is on call since he, too, took the weekend off. I’m holding down the fort by myself. I’ll let Chief Bobbette know you want to speak to him.” Nellie started jotting down a note to the chief.

“No, please don’t,” Ethan interjected, as they turned to leave. “Let’s just pretend we were never here.”

“I’m worried about Everett. I don’t know who to trust anymore. I’d say the chief and his grandson are knee deep in this whole plot to steal Dr. Frost’s invention.” Lily voiced what her father and grandmother had been thinking.

“Those blueprints are several years old, and technology has changed. Why are they so important now? Or was finding the blueprints a trick to flush out Everett?” Ethan posed the question.

Everyone sat silently for several minutes in Maya’s SUV, thinking and trying to fit the puzzle pieces together.

“Officer Kittery seemed to be waiting for us by the shed last night. I’m going to call a friend of mine to do a sweep of my house and Martha’s to see if there are any listening devices planted around. I’ll have her check everyone’s phones and computers, too. The more I think about it, the more it seems like too much of a coincidence.” Maya picked up her cell and made the call.

“I say let’s get Digger, Dash, and Daisy and check out the fishing shack. Wouldn’t that be a likely place to hold Everett captive? That way, they can make sure he’s working on the invention and then take possession of it as soon as it is finished. Everett did mention he was about ready to apply for a patent.” Ethan threw out the possibility.

“We are treading on thin ice. We are about to take on the Sunridge Junction police chief and his grandson. The corruption may run deeper than that,” Maya said as she pulled into her garage.

“Let’s set a trap to expose the culprits. Maybe we can enlist Martha. I don’t want her placed in a dangerous situation, though.
