Present moment awareness
There is only one moment and that’s the one happening now, as you sit here reading this.
This has always been the only moment and always will be. This moment never changes.
What changes is the scenery occurring around this moment. This moment has seen the birth and demise of a hundred universes and will probably hang around to watch the birth and demise of a few hundred more. But whatever the time on your clock or date on your calendar, this moment will never change.
Rein in the wild horses of your mind as they charge unbridled hither and thither, into remembered scenes of the past or imagined scenes of the future. Draw your awareness backwards into the cave of your original spirit, and center yourself in this moment, now.
Resist the temptation to project your mind willy-nilly into an imagined future except during positive visualization sessions [see Visualization]. projecting even five minutes into the future often leads to anxiety if your thoughts are left to roam freely. For example, you’re looking forward to your friend coming round. You project an imaginary scene on to your inner screen. You see the tea and cakes, the ambience, the chit chat, the love shared, and you feel happy as your chi rises to your middle tantien (heart center).
There you are, milking the fantasy, when all of a sardine, your system defaults to the ‘worry’ option [see Worry]. At this juncture the worry gargoyle infiltrates the happy tone of your moment, you start getting anxious, and your fantasy turns to horror as you picture your friend arriving in uncommunicative mood, the tea being cold, the cakes stale, the ambience flat, the chit chat strained and the love refused.
Meantime, while you’ve been playing with your adrenalin levels, this moment has been continuing in its majestic way as the scenery shifts all around it, and you’ve missed it all.
This moment is all there is, and you’ve missed it.
It’s the same with memories of the past. When you let your mind dive into past pictures for too long, whether to nourish yourself on nostalgia or punish yourself with regrets, you inevitably eventually end up with an unsettling feeling of unfulfilled longing. Meanwhile, the scenery’s passing you by and you’ve lost precious time not being here.
The fact is that all the power in the universe that ever was and ever will be is contained in this present moment. This power (chi) is the catalyst that transforms your thoughts into manifest reality. When your mind is focused in another time, you’re denied access to this power, and therefore deprived of the very nourishment you’re erroneously seeking in past and future projections.
Other than for dedicated visualization sessions to heal past or future scenarios, spending time anywhere other than this present moment constitutes insanity. Only in the stillness of this moment can you find the power to manifest the things you want. Only in this present moment will you find the nourishment, peace and healing you’re craving.
This eternal moment is like a pool containing the waters of youth and immortality.
