Kelly Leak got off his motorcycle and put his arm around Amanda.

"You didn't have to butt in, Kelly," she said sulkily.

"I just didn't like that guy messing with you, getting you upset," he said.

"Look, buster." Amanda pushed his arm off her shoulder. "I can take care of myself!"

"Hey, I know that," he said, holding his palms up in front of him. "I just wanted to remind you that I'm around, you know, when rm needed."

They walked a few steps together.

"Hey, babe," he said, "you're not gonna go for all that baseball crap, are you?"

"I don't know." She spun to face him, her bands on her hips. "But why NOT? Who are you to call it crap? You bang around there enough!"

He bung his head and scuffed the dirt. "Aw, just for laughs. They're a bunch of babies. And besides, they're ..." He cleared his throat. "They're ..."

"Yeah?"

"They're boys," he said softly.

"Oh yeah? Well, I can hack it. I don't remember YOU being able to hit my curve ball."

"Aw, I wasn't really trying."

"Oh yeah? Well, maybe I need to try it out on some other guys who will try harder. Maybe you just made up my mind for me. Here." She handed him a bunch of movie-star maps and shoved him down into her chair. "You mind the store.”

He stared after her as she walked away. ''Where you goin'?"

"To the movies. To be an ACTRESS!"
