Chapter Seventeen

Litzy

We reach the place quickly by car. I recognize it immediately as the place where my friend Helen and I used to have sleepovers, or camping out in the yard, of course, always chaperoned by her parents, who would remain inside, giving us some privacy. We would imagine that we were alone, that there was no one else for miles around. And with Helen’s parents as they were, we could do that.

Memories flood me at the very sight of the house. Childhood. Naivete. A blissful sensation that life is good, and all you needed to do was be good as well, and it would treat you right. Nothing bad would ever happen to you. Those were the notions I grew up with. I used to believe them. Now? I’m not so sure.

Dax heads to the door first. He tries to open it, but it won’t budge.

“I could open that for you,” Harvey offers.

“I could open it, too,” I interrupt him, enjoying the look of complete surprise on his face. I get down from the landing and reach for a small, barely visible potted plant. I lift it, then I lift a small brick which seems like its immovable to the naked eye. But not to the one who knows what to look for. Once I remove the loose brick, my hand dives into the dark hole underneath, extracting a shiny, metallic object. “Voila!” I can’t resist saying this.

“Well, look at you,” Harvey grins. “The girl’s got tricks up her sleeve, too.”

I smile. But when I turn to Dax, I notice he’s not amused. So, I proceed to unlock the door, and let them in. I haven’t been to this place in years. It still looks as I remember it. Helen’s mother always had impeccable taste, and she wanted everything perfect, even in a place they didn’t frequent that often. Paintings hang on the walls. The pillows on the couch in the middle of the living room are neatly arranged according to color. The blinds are drawn. There is every indication of a lack of a human presence here, yet there is no stale smell and almost no dust at all.

“Wow, this place is neat,” Harvey is the first to comment. He approaches the liquor cabinet and tries to open it.

“Don’t,” I urge. “I don’t want us to ruin anything here. We just need it to stay the night, right?”

“Are you sure it’s safe?” Dax asks, without looking straight at me.

Instead, he is looking everywhere around. From the look on his face, you’d expect him to find an intruder any moment. But I appreciate that in him. The need to make sure that we’re all safe, before he can lower his guard. In fact, I’m not even sure I’ve seen him do that, apart from those two very special occasions, which we somehow aren’t speaking of. I guess the fact that our lives are still in danger makes it difficult to discuss the potential consequences of sleeping together. In the
