Chapter Fifteen
Austin cursed the entire ride to the cabin. He couldnât speed, or he risked getting pulled over and given a ticket â it wasnât the ticket that bothered him, but the time that would be wasted â and by the time he made it there, he felt like a year had passed.
The moment he read the words on the photo of the note, one phrase stuck out at him: ursid fucker. It was revealing. It meant the attack was targeted, and it involved Austin. Someone was outraged that Jasmine was hooking up with a bear shifter, and Austin had a sneaking suspicion that if it was her ex, Kirk, then he was a shifter too⦠just of a different species. Jasmine spurning an ex was one thing, but if they now had to swallow the fact that she was with a bear? That could cause them to go off the deep end and start doing shit like this.
It also meant that none of this was harmless because Austinâs enemies would think nothing of killing a human.
But it is an act of war to kill the mate of the clanâs Alpha.
If he could find Kirk or any scent of him, he could narrow down what shifter species he was and go to their Alpha for assistance. It would be their responsibility to get Kirk in line and prevent war.
Or Austin could find Kirk himself and end him altogether. Austin was well within his rights.
He signaled to the security personnel as he turned down the driveway and shouted a greeting as he flew toward the house.
Even before they reached the first wooden plank, Austinâs keen nose detected the presence of blood.
His nostrils flared as he sampled the different aromas coming across his palate. Security had maintained a distance from the house so they wouldnât taint the scents, and now Austin filtered out the other smells he didnât need, such as the highly distracting scent like Jasmineâs fear-laced musk.
Austin focused on the metallic scent of blood, drawing nearer the door. He dropped to one knee and moved his nose in closer.
The door opened just as he muttered to himself, âItâs not human blood.â
âNo, itâs squirrel blood,â Jasmine said. âWait, why would you say that? How could you know that?â
âHmm?â Austin said, not really paying attention. âI thought I told you not to open that door.â
She ignored him. âI asked how you knew that was squirrel blood just by looking?â
âI didnât know by looking. I knew by smelling.â
âBy smelling? Spend a lot of time around squirrel blood or something?â
âOr something.â It wasnât exactly the right time to say, I can smell it because, oh, by the way, the rumors about shifters, theyâre true, and Iâm one of them. A bear, in fact.
Instead, Austin grunted, returning to his task of testing the air for scents.
âThe squirrel wasnât just about trying to intimidate you,â he muttered.
âIt wasnât? Well, it sure did a hell of a job anyway. Color me intimidated.â
âHe was using it to mask his scent.
