Staci, it turned out, was a regular at the club. As a Gold-level member in their loyalty program, she had no trouble getting us a private booth in a cozy corner. I tried to hide my smile when the server appeared. Apparently the staff knew her more personal preferences, too, and was happy to cater to them. I thanked the waitress, who had flawless ebony skin, big hips, and a smile that promised all sorts of indecencies, and then hid my grin in my glass of sparkling wine as she and Staci flirted shamelessly for several minutes. As their banter lengthened, I let my eyes roam the club. It was artsy without being pretentious, and I could easily see why Staci loved it—attractive waitstaff and extensive wine lists aside.

The dance floor was broad and creatively lit, and what I took to be a local celebrity DJ was managing the music with surprising skill. Lean, attractive bodies covered the dance floor, all of them aglow with the colored lights and the bliss of a night out. Smiling wistfully, I let my gaze drift a little further. It slid along the far wall and then snagged on a single, unmistakable form. Damn it.

Thad was here. He lounged in a booth with two other men, all of them sinfully hot and radiating a casually dominant air. It was like everything around them belonged to them—and why not? They were knee-deep in super-model beautiful women, most of them seemingly wearing as little as possible.

I was in the middle of calculating exactly how much body tape or fashion glue must be required to keep some of the particularly scanty dresses on when our server excused herself. Staci sighed, took a gulp of wine, and leaned toward me.

“Sorry. Monique always knows just how to distract me. What are we looking at?” She followed my gaze as she took another sip and then winced. “Lovely.” Huffing, she shook her head. “The heartbreakers strike again.”

Glancing at her, I raised an eyebrow. “Again?”

She waved a hand carelessly in their direction. “They’re like that everywhere. Doesn’t matter where they go, your assistant and his brothers draw a crowd.”

“I didn’t realize they were brothers.” Now that she’d said it, I could clearly see the resemblance, though. Had he told them about me? Bragging to their smug, arrogant faces about how he’d banged his boss? The thought was humiliating, and I slapped my glass down on the table.

Staci raised an eyebrow at me, and I grimaced, then scrubbed at my face with my hands. “I feel like such an idiot,” I confessed, unable to keep the whine out of my voice. “I’ve barely known him a week, Stace, and I slept with him! You know me. I’m not like this.”

“No,” Staci agreed, leaning back and observing me over her drink with slightly narrowed eyes. “You’ve always been the cautious one.” She gestured impatiently, her lips pursing. “It’s not like that got you anywhere good, either, you know. How long did you spend
