When I woke the next morning, for a few minutes I tried to recall what fight I’d been in. My abdomen hurt when I moved, and my balls were sore like I’d been kicked in the nuts. Remembering where I was, and that it was all due to my horse-riding experience, I groaned out loud as I tried to move my legs.

“Fucking holy bastard. What the actual fuck? Owww.”

I was desperate for a piss, and half considered using the litter bin in the room, but the hotness of a bath meant I slowly hobbled and whined all the way to the bathroom.

Things felt a little easier after an hour in the tub. By then I was ravenous, so I fixed some lunch. I’d just swallowed the last of my sandwich when there was a knock on the door. I’d bet this was Fifi, here to laugh at my expense.

So when I swung the door open with a shit-eating grin on my face, I didn’t expect to be looking down at Daphne Ridley. I quickly recovered myself, pasting the smile back on. “Hello, Daphne.”

“Hello, Liam. I probably should have called ahead, but I was on my way out and I just thought I’d see if you were available for a very quick chat. Mind if I come in?”

Like I could say no to the person who was letting me stay both in the house and in Richstone itself. “Sure, come through. You’ll have to excuse my slow walk. I’m not used to being astride a horse.”

She spoke but carried on walking ahead of me. “Yes, I saw you were riding yesterday. It is quite a workout. Maxwell also has some protective shorts he wears underneath his jodhpurs. A future recommendation.”

“Well, I don’t imagine getting back on one anytime soon, but yes, in order to protect my future children, I would need some of those.” I wondered how I’d managed to be talking about my balls in the space of a minute of Daphne being in the house. “Would you like a drink?” I offered.

“No. No. I’ll just have a quick sit in the living room with you and then I’ll be on my way. Lots to do.”

I followed her into the room. Daphne sat on the three-seater. I sat on the sectional diagonal to her.

She carried herself just as you’d expect a headteacher to. Straight backed, she wore tailored clothing, and her hair didn’t have a strand out of place.

“Phoebe seems to be having fun and I know you’re spending a lot of time together. I wanted to remind you about showing her more about the world outside of Richstone and taking her with you to Sharrow Manor at some point.”

“I’ve not forgotten,” I replied.

“Phoebe likes you I think, and that’s good. I’m glad you get along, but I don’t want her wearing rose-tinted spectacles as to who you are and where you’re from. I think if you took her there just briefly. Maybe a quick tour of the place or something, it might just let reality sink in a little for her.
