What the hell was happening here? I felt a little bit like a princess in one of Macy’s movies. Here was this handsome prince, telling me he wanted me. He was offering me a job I would be a fool to refuse. He even thought to include my mother. I had to be dreaming. Everything in me was screaming to say yes but my moral compass had other ideas.

“Ben, I don’t think it’s a good idea to sleep with the nanny. It’s a bit cliché, don’t you think?” I narrowed my eyes and leaned in closer. “Besides, aren’t you drunk?”

My body was aching for his touch, but logic was winning this one. If he was drunk, I didn’t want to sleep with him either. The last thing I needed was for him to wake up sober and decide this had been a bad idea. Then I would be without a job.

But maybe this wasn’t the best place for me to work anyway. My normally boring life had been anything but since I walked through that door a week ago.

He let go of my face and turned away. He paced the kitchen, running a hand through his hair. “Avery, I know it’s crazy. I won’t lie either - I have a bad track record with my nannies. This time is different though - you’re different.”

The last time I was at the agency to fill out some paperwork, a few other girls were there and when I told them where I was working, they smirked. They acted kind of strange and now I knew why. I wasn’t the first nanny Ben slept with and with his track record, I probably wouldn’t be the last.

“Tell me how this is different than the other girls. We’ve known each other a week, Ben. That’s it. A week isn’t very long. We haven’t spent much time together. I don’t get how this is different.”

He sighed and began pacing again. “I can’t explain it but it just is. I don’t just think about getting you in my bed, Avery. I think about getting to know you and taking care of you. I sense your loneliness and the pain you’ve experienced in your short life and I want to make it better. I see you with my daughter and you’re so natural with her. You’ll make a great mother.”

“I don’t need a savior, Ben. I’ve been doing fine on my own this far. I don’t need a knight in shining armor to make it all better. I can take care of myself.” I took a deep breath and got up from my stool. Someone had to walk away now before things really got out of control. I gathered up my school books and laptop, fighting back the tears.

“Ben, I’m going to go to my room now. Tomorrow, I’m going to go back to my apartment and I’m going to let the agency know this didn’t work out. I hope you find someone who’s a good fit for your family.
