Something like reality and the proper passage of time reasserted themselves around ten when I caught the first hints of my new bride’s adrenaline starting to wear off and weariness settling in its place. Leaning over, I spoke softly in her ear.

“Ready to call it a night?”

She nodded, relief touching her expression. “It’s all lovely,” she said quickly. “I’m just tired, I think.”

“It’s been a busy day. Stay here, I’ll be right back.” I discretely made our excuses to Sawyer and Wren, who were unofficially running things. Then I swept my bride out without a fuss, keeping one arm around her as we made our way down the stairs. She was wearing flats, but it was dark, and her hands were full of the skirts of her dress, and, well, she was my wife now. For as long as she remained that way, she was mine to care for, and I refused to slack on the job.

“I’ve no idea where we are,” Ava confessed as I led her to my truck and helped her climb in, gathering the hem of her skirt and making sure it was tucked in around her. “Or where the things I put together ended up.”

“We’re in the Park that borders clan lands,” I explained when I climbed into the driver’s seat, tugging my tie loose and unfastening the top buttons of my stifling formal shirt. “Bellamy had Thad drop your things at the cabin.”

“The cabin?” she asked in surprise.

“I promised you a hotel room.” I threw her a smile as I carefully navigated out of the over-stuffed parking area and onto the rough-cut road that would lead us to the other side of the Park. “But that was before I knew the wedding would be here. There aren’t any hotels nearby, but the Park leases cabins on the far side. It’s as close as I could get.”

“As long as it has a bed, I’m content.” Ava leaned her head back against the seat.

“Take a nap if you want,” I encouraged. “I’ll wake you when we’re there.”

It took about fifteen minutes to cross the Park and reach the cabin. Ava didn’t sleep, but we rode in companionable silence. When I parked, the quiet gave way to incredulity.

“Zory, I thought you said you got a cabin!”

“I did.” Shutting off the truck, I hopped out and rounded the vehicle to open her door.

“My grandfather lived in a cabin,” my bride protested as I offered a hand to assist her out. “That’s—that’s a chalet.”

“I’m afraid,” I teased, keeping hold of her hand as I led her along the stone walk, “that I’m not versed in the differences, so I’ll have to take your word for it.”

Despite my amusement, I couldn’t deny a rush of satisfaction at her response. An A-frame log building, the cabin was the nicest the Park had—large and airy, outfitted with luxury touches at every turn. It was warm inside, the lights on a dim setting just as I’d left them when Cooper and I had stopped by earlier to double check that everything was in order while our suits were being tailored.
