Two-year-old Annie flashes across the room, her eyes blazing and her brow furrowed. The light catches her gleaming white teeth as she nears her prey. She is a lioness. She is a wolf. No, she is a ravenous velociraptor ready to sink her teeth and claws into a cute little baby triceratops. In a stern voice reserved for such situations (a bit louder and deeper than usual), I say her name: “AAAAnnie!” She turns toward my voice, and our eyes connect. Instantly her forward motion stops, her brow relaxes, her claws retract, and those sharp teeth disappear into a closed mouth. She points to a toy the unaware baby triceratops is playing with and says something that sounds like “Mine.” I hold out my arms, and she comes to me. “Mine,” she says again. As she settles into my lap, I whisper gently in her ear that she put down the toy ten minutes ago. The baby is playing with it now. I suggest we find a different toy. She toddles to the bookshelf and returns with a dinosaur book that we read over and over.
