And I was Vishvamitra’s well-prized champion.

After the ritual had at last been performed,

each phrase and vessel ringing clearly in its place,

he told us as a blessing we’d travel to Mithila,

where the king keeps the world’s most enormous bow

that once belonged to the potent Lord Shiva.

The holy man told me, like a medal for my skill,

of the king of Mithila’s marvellous daughter,

so lovely that princes had besieged the city,

each requesting the favour of her hand.

But the king had proclaimed that his daughter would marry

only the man who could master Shiva’s bow.

I had set out on this story and could taste my part.
