Chapter 6

Jack got to the lunchroom. He was late. He quickly got his lunch. Then he looked for his friends.

Drake waved to him. Drake was sitting with Logan, Paige, and Willow.

Paige and Willow lived at Grayson Apartments, too.

Jack hurried over to their table and sat down. “Why are you late?” Paige asked.

“Did you hear the news? Some kid stole the Aztec ring,” Drake said.

“You don’t look so good, dude. Are you sick?” Logan asked.

Willow said, “One at a time. Give Jack a chance to answer.”

Drake spoke first. He said, “Did you hear the news? Some guy stole the Aztec ring.”

Jack said, “I’m that guy. But I didn’t steal the Aztec ring.”

The other four seemed very surprised to hear it.

“What do you mean you’re that kid?” Drake asked.

Paige said, “You don’t seem like you’re joking, Jack. But you must be. You would never steal the ring.”

Jack said, “That’s for sure. I didn’t steal the ring. But Mr. Flint said that I did. He said I was the only one who could have.”

“No wonder you look sick, Jack,” Logan said.

“We know you didn’t steal it, Jack. But why does Mr. Flint think you did?” Willow asked.

Jack told them he stayed after class to look at the ring. And he told them he was in the science lab by himself.

“Why did you stay in the lab by yourself? That was a dumb thing to do,” Logan said.

“That wasn’t nice, Logan,” Willow said.

Logan said, “Maybe not. But it’s true. And you should have known better, Jack.”

“I know. But I wanted to see the ring,” Jack said.

“We might have done the same thing,” Paige said.

“Not me,” Logan said.

“Or me,” Drake said.

Willow said, “Don’t make Jack feel worse. We need to talk about how to help him.”

“Where was the ring when you left the lab?” Paige asked.

“On the table,” Jack said.

“Did someone come into the lab before you left?” Drake asked.

“No,” Jack said.

“Where were Mr. Flint and Mr. Zane?” Logan asked.

“They were in the hall. Just outside the door,” Jack said.

“They should know who went into the lab after you left. Maybe that person took it. Who was it?” Willow asked.

“Mr. Flint, that’s who. And the ring was gone. But I don’t know how. I didn’t take it,” Jack said.

“We know you didn’t,” Paige said.

“Yeah,” said Logan. “That’s one thing we know.”

“Maybe the ring fell onto the floor. Did you look there?” Drake asked.

“Yes,” Jack said.

“Maybe it fell onto the floor. And then it rolled under something, Jack,” Paige said.

“I looked all over the lab. The ring wasn’t in the lab,” Jack said.

“That doesn’t make much sense,” Logan said.

“No, it doesn’t,” Willow said.

The five sat for a few minutes. And they didn’t talk. But all five were thinking about the ring.

Then Jack said, “What am I going to do? How can I prove I didn’t take the Aztec ring?”

Paige said, “Mr. Flint went into the lab after you left. And he was the only one to do that. And then he said the ring was gone. Is that right?”

“Yes, that’s right,” Jack said.
