Chapter 11

A few minutes after Rachel’s retreat to her room, a knock sounded on the door. Axall. It had to be him. Her stomach flipped. She eyed the door and ran a hand through her hair, her frustration and her confusion mounting.

What the hell was she supposed to do? Tell him the truth about Cryo-Z? Tell him she may very well lose her mind one day?

The knocking persisted. She sighed and approached the door.

“Please, Axall,” she said. “As I’ve said, I’m not feeling well, and I just want to be alone.”

“But I’ve brought you sustenance that my research says will help you feel better. Please, open the door, Rachel.” He paused for a moment. “If you don’t open the door, I will not hesitate to force my way in. Your health is just as important to me as your safety.”

She flung the door open and glared at him. “You really don’t have any boundaries, do you?”

Ignoring her question, he gave her a concerned look, his eyes sweeping up and down her body, as if he were checking to see if she was injured. Despite her annoyance, his concern touched her, especially when she noticed the tray he was holding. The tray contained a bowl of chicken noodle soup, a glass of what looked like ginger ale in crushed ice, and a sleeve of crackers.

“Did you make that yourself?” she asked, hoping he hadn’t bothered Karla.

“No, I replicated it on my ship. I have a food replicator and it is programmed to make many food items that humans like. I hope that this is the correct food a human prefers to eat when sick. If you would like something else, I would be happy to replicate it for you.” His eyes beamed with warmth.

“That’s very sweet of you, Axall,” she found herself saying. She peered at him, torn between sending him away and inviting him into her room. She didn’t want to hurt him, but she also didn’t want to encourage him. If only he would decide to leave on his own.

Before she could decide what to do, he started stepping into the room, angling his body to the side to get around her. She stepped out of his way and sighed.

“Axall, we shouldn’t be alone like this. I-I don’t want you to get the idea that I’m going to accept you as my mate, because I’m not. I can’t.”

He set the tray down on her bedside table and turned to her. “If you are not feeling well, my pretty human, you need to be in bed.” He pulled back the covers and gestured for her to crawl inside.

She stared at him, unsure of what to say or do. She hated that she’d lied to him while on the porch about not feeling well.

“Get into bed,” he said in a tone of command. “Get into bed and I will perform a quick medical scan. Once that is complete, I will feed you the soup and crackers.” He retrieved a pouch that was attached to his belt and withdrew a small blinking device.
