Consider this: the vast majority of interactions that take place every moment of every day between the almost seven billion or so human beings on this planet are peaceful and nonviolent. People work together, sit together on trains, buses, and airplanes, walk past each other in the streets and shopping malls, and share living space, all without harming each other. Moreover, billions of these relations between people are loving and kind: family members and friends care for one another and help each other with difficulties; doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers look after those who are suffering; aid organizations provide for the needs of refugees, and so forth. The incidence of people killing and harming each other is comparatively small. That is why such stories are reported in the news: because they are atypical. They are also sensational; they are what people want to hear. But focusing only on these stories and overlooking the everyday activities of ordinary people leads to a pessimistic, cynical picture of humanity.
