"Steerboard side, push away hard to port!" shouted Meilyr's guide in English, one Wischard by name. Meilyr translated instantly.

Stephen came to his feet with the others and drove his oar into the water, finding the submerged bar and pushing. Although the man was ancient and hadn't a tooth left in his head, there was nothing addled about his thinking. And he knew the river. They'd be into the Mouth long before Stephen could have ever reached it on his own.

As the snekke again caught the current, two of the Welshmen on the port side of the snekke called out, their voices raised in alarm. They pointed into the river.

"My pardon, sir," Wischard said to Stephen in English, sounding startled, "but your lady has just left us."

Stephen pivoted in surprise. Cecilia, who had been sitting next to him only a moment ago, was gone, having left shoes and stockings beneath the seat.

"Over here, sir!" Meilyr called from the front bench, his voice heavy with amusement.

Stephen crossed the snekke and scanned the water. She was nowhere to be seen. He cursed himself for his pride. Because of that he hadn't tied her to the bench. But he hadn't believed she was so determined to escape him that she'd try to drown herself.

Yards away, something glistening and black broke from the water. Then she was gone again. Into the water he went after her. God take her, she could swim!
