It will still be (mostly) about styling

Whether they’re manufacturers’ concept cars or student designs, the most memorable models that I’ve seen are the ones with that most traditional quality: kerb appeal. Perhaps above all else, car design is still about that emotional draw of a wonderful shape – a matter of surfaces and shapes and how light falls on them. As Coventry’s design-course director Aamer Mahmud put it, ‘It’s got to be something that’s so beautiful that people can’t resist having it.’ For me, three of the students’ designs particularly embodied such values.

Arash Shahbaz’s engaging update on the concept of an MGB mixes the modern and traditional in unexpected ways. The shape of the car is cutting-edge modern, with a residual wraparound windshield, yet it manages to evoke the volume, proportion and stance of the MG original and even hint strongly at its two-slot radiator grille. And, remarkably, it would use bold, dominant leather straps to fasten the bonnet and echo earlier MGs from the 1930s. There would be no self-driving kit here. Power would come from four separate electric motors with full independent torque vectoring, so it’s designed with both the road and the track in mind.
