“You are free, Ram Puri. One-two-three all India free, free as the wind,” Hari Puri said. “I have done my duty. The rest is up to you. You may do as you please and go where you please. Now catch up with the other initiates. They will have reached the Sangam by now. Bathing in the water there will complete your initiation.”

I managed to catch up with them, dive into the waters, and bathe. I remained underwater as long as I could. I was in the womb of the Mother Ganga. I was about to be born. I was swimming in the Ocean of Milk, searching for the physician Dhanwantari, and his kamandal, his kumbh, which held the Nectar of Immortality. No, I was immersed in that amniotic amrit. Emerging from the mother of waters, I counted my first seven steps, as instructed by Pandit Shesh Narayan, with each step calling the Three Worlds and the Four Directions to witness the completion of my sanskar and my mythological birth.

The new initiates splashed water and played like children in a swimming pool for the first time, dunking each other and diving into the water. Then there was a roll of thunder, and we all looked at the sky in amazement. A large gray cloud resembling a swan appeared above our heads and dropped what looked like rain. Everyone knew, however, that it was more than rain. The invisible Saraswati River and Goddess had shown herself and blessed us with her raindrops of the Nectar of Immortality.

Excited, elated, and freezing cold, I ran back to the akhara, repeating my new mantra to keep my mind focused. Unable to conceal my joy, I rushed into Hari Puri’s tent, but he had gone. I was told that he had suddenly fallen ill and departed with Amar Puri in the jeep back to Rajasthan.
