DESIGNING THE UNITED NATIONS COMPLEX IN NEW YORK » Australia supported the USAâs moves to replace the failed League of Nations, based in Paris, with a more ambitious and global intergovernmental system: the United Nations, to be based in New York. Melbourne architect Guy Sollieux was chosen to join the Board of Design for the UN headquarters in Manhattan. Led by American architect Wallace Harrison, the board approved concepts by Le Corbusier and precocious Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer for a cluster of four glass-curtained slab blocks in different formats and heights. Opened in 1952, these buildings influenced Australiaâs commercial architecture for the next two decades.
