Chapter 9
Doona ushered the pair into the flat. Bessie moved over to the sitting room to join them.
“Good morning,” Mia said perkily. “How are you both this morning?”
“I’m fine,” Bessie replied. “I’m enjoying the milder weather. I wasn’t sure what to expect from February.”
“We’re lucky this year that it’s quite mild,” Harold agreed. “Half-term is always very busy, and it can be quite miserable if it’s cold and wet. Children get restless if they’re trapped indoors all day.”
“So do I,” Bessie told him.
He chuckled. “After all these years at Lakeview, I suspect I would as well. One of the best parts of my job is that I need to be all over the park every day.”
“Do you walk or bicycle?” Bessie asked.
Harold flushed. “I hate to admit it, but mostly I drive. When someone needs the manager, it tends to be quite urgent, at least in that someone’s mind. Walking or biking would be far more enjoyable for me, but it would take more time.”
Bessie nodded, even though she didn’t think his words rang true. The roads through the park were circuitous and narrow. The cars she’d seen within the park had always been moving very slowly. Perhaps not as slowly as she generally walked, but certainly more slowly than a bicycle could travel.
“But I didn’t come to talk about me,” Harold interrupted her thoughts. “Mia and I wanted to see how your holiday has been going and make sure that you don’t need anything.”
“Everything has been fine,” Doona assured him.
“That’s good to hear. How was your drawing class yesterday?” he asked.
“It was very good. Andrea is incredibly talented,” Doona replied.
“And the walk through the woods with Brett?” was Harold’s next question.
Doona glanced at Bessie, who shook her head. “It was fine. He’s clearly very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.”
“Good, good. I’m happy to hear that,” Harold replied. “It’s very important that you enjoy your stay, of course. We want all of our guests to be happy here, but as you’re one of the owners, well, it’s even more important.”
“The estate isn’t settled yet,” Doona told him.
“No, but it should be soon, at least from what I’ve been told,” Harold said. “Stuart suggested that you might be interested in playing a more active role in the management of the park.”
“Did he, now?” Doona asked wryly.
“Is that not correct?” Harold asked.
“Stuart and I have not discussed the park in any meaningful way,” Doona told him. “He suggested, when Charles first died, that I not bother myself with Charles’s business concerns until it became clear whether I was actually going to inherit anything or not. I understand that the company owns other properties besides this park, but that’s about all I know.”
Harold nodded. “I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the company’s other holdings. Obviously, my concern is this park. I’ve been working incredibly hard to keep everything running while the court case has been dragging on endlessly. It’s difficult, not really having any direction from the owners of the property.”
“I was told that
