A wave of nervousness flashed over me. But I knew I could do it. I had to. And I’d catch the girls when they jumped, just like we’d practiced so many times.

I turned back to the girls. “I’m going to jump down. Then I’ll catch you,” I said.

Above, I saw the fire slinking hungrily toward the center of the tent. If the fire latched on to the wooden center pole, it would go up in flames. The big top would collapse. We had to hurry.

I latched my hands around the top riser and swung my legs over the side. Then I let go, dropping easily to the ground.

Twin faces stared down at me. I tried to smile. But what I saw filled me with horror.

The flames were directly above their heads now.

I raised my arms. “One by one,” I said. “Just like we’re performing at home. Okay?”

I’d barely finished speaking when Patty launched herself into the air, arms flailing as she fell. Her body slammed into mine, and we both fell backward.

For a moment, everything went black. My breath was knocked out of me. Patty rolled off me, and I scrambled to my feet, ready to catch Charlotte.

But no one was standing on the top riser. Charlotte was gone.
