Chapter Seventeen
Kala followed General Turner down the long hallway feeling like she was in grade school walking to the principalâs office. It wouldnât matter if Kala had super powers like Asmodeus, Turner would always make her feel intimidated. Although Kala had to admit that he was taking all of this quite well. Nothing seemed to faze the guy. The more crazy the explanation, the more intrigued he became. Kala figured that it was just the way his brain worked. Turner was an inventor or, at least, he hired brilliant people to invent things for him: either way, he saw the world differently than most people. Kala knew enough about history to know that people like Turner really did change the world.
Turner slowed down enough so that Kala was walking beside him. âIâm assuming everything that you told me before is true as well? About the whole Atlas thing?â
Kala nodded yes, not quite sure why she was confessing. Still, if the General thought he could help, then at this point she was desperate.
âInteresting,â was all Turner said.
When Kala couldnât think of anything to say, she ended up simply putting one foot in front of the other to whatever destination Turner had in store for her.
After a few twists and turns through the Compound, Turner spoke again. âThis Demon character, he can just appear at any time? Does he use some kind of device or is it a power?â
âDefinitely a power, and yes, he can jump in whenever he wants to. Thatâs how I ended up in New York,â Kala explained.
âAnd you escaped this⦠Asmodeus?â Turner prodded.
Kala realized sheâd have to bring up the Malaks as well. âI escaped while he was distracted with a Malak.â
âAn Angel?â Turner asked curiously.
âThey call themselves Malaks,â Kala said, impressed at Turnerâs knowledge. âBut yeah, I guess theyâre Angels.â
âYes, the word Malak means Angel in Arabic. This is old magic,â Turner said as if categorizing Kalaâs particular situation in a filing bin in his head.
âMagic?â Kala asked timidly.
âOh yes.â Turner appeared to be opening up at the excitement of all the dayâs new revelations. âMy wife Roberta is a student of all kinds of magic. Sheâs quite an expert. Vodun is her strongest suit, but sheâs dabbled in old magic from the Greeks and the Arabs. Sheâll be very interested to hear about all this.â
âMaybe we shouldnât be talking about this too much. Wouldnât General Clifton try and have us all executed or committed to a psychiatric ward?â Kala didnât like the idea of Turner telling people, even if it was his wife, about her situation. She barely understood it herself and she figured in two days when she didnât accomplish her mission Turner would have enough on his hands trying to save the world.
âLet me handle Harry. I wonât be able to stop him from hunting you, but I will be able to help you hide. Iâm developing a system now for tracking people and making people disappear. They go hand-in-hand as you might guess.
