JUPITER
Time it takes to traverse the zodiac: Approximately 12 years
Sign it rules: Sagittarius
House it governs: Ninth
HANGING OUT AND DATING: JUPITER
Jupiter is the gambler of the zodiac, the one willing to hop into a stranger’s car and drive into the sunset. It has the potential to help us have growth experiences that are fun and expand what’s possible. This planet is also distractible; it can make us feel as if where we are is the only place we’ve ever been. Jupiter is associated with luck and expansion. In the context of dating, it may influence us to act before we think, in pursuit of experiences that feel good. Because of this, where we have Jupiter in the chart is where we are most likely to be impulsive, spontaneous, and ready to take risks.
A FOCUS ON FUN
If this planet is very strong in your chart, you are likely to seek out electric, exciting attractions. You may also get bored easily; mundane things such as planning and being on time may frustrate you. The tendency is to be so impatient to get to the fun part of a relationship that you neglect to make sure that the dynamic is based on anything real, let alone healthy, safe, or sustainable.
Jupiter is associated with drinking—a common way to manage social anxiety when we’re getting to know new people. But too much cocktail-fueled escape can make it hard to keep clear tabs on how a date is unfolding—if for no other reason than we might not clearly remember what went down after the fact. And flirting or hooking up under the influence doesn’t help facilitate meaningful connections, if that’s what you’re seeking.
Jupiter’s energies are great for short affairs and fun, low-key relationships that don’t get too messy. But they’re not as good for the steps involved in forging a lasting connection with someone. Regardless of whether alcohol is involved, when you’re moving too fast, you’re likely to skip over the foundational phase of getting to know a person—and you can end up making assumptions, which may create cracks in the foundation.
Dating unavailable people or telling yourself that they will be available if you’re fun enough can be another mistake made under the influence of Jupiter. It’s easy to tell a story about what’s happening between you and someone else, but you won’t know what that story means until it has stood the test of time.
IS WHAT FEELS GOOD ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU?
Another trouble with Jupiter is that, because of its resiliency, it can take you pretty far into an unhealthy situation. So, it’s important to do reality checks to make sure that what you’re choosing actually feels good and is the best way for you to feel healthy, happy, and whole—or, at the least, it isn’t blocking you from achieving those things. The key here is motive: If you can motivate yourself to compromise, or to slow down by understanding that doing so will help you get more of your actual needs met over the long term, you’re totally talking Jupiter’s language.
