Square or quadrature

The square aspect or quadrature to the Sun can only be formed by the superior planets and is due to their having orbits larger than the Earth’s. The Moon, of course, because it orbits the Earth, also forms this aspect. When a planet’s angular distance along the ecliptic from the Sun is 90° the astrologer calls this a square () aspect; whereas the astronomer speaks of the planet being at quadrature (figure 15).

Viewed from the Earth, a planet is at eastern quadrature when it is 90° eastwards of the Sun, midway between conjunction and opposition. In the Moon’s case, this would be in its first quarter. When a planet is at western quadrature it is 90° westwards of the Sun at apparent midpoint between opposition and conjunction. For the Moon this would be last quarter.
