Chapter 9

Mark

Although I hated the thought of taking Tasha with me to her condo, I knew she was right. She knew the place much better than I did. With her there, we could get in and out much quicker. I just hoped we didn’t run into trouble while we were there.

After we finished our meal and I paid the bill, the sun was already setting. I was tempted to take Tasha to my safehouse nearby, but if we didn’t go to her condo tonight, we’d have to wait until tomorrow night. By then, the CIA could easily clear out the place. No, the quicker we got what we needed and got out, the better.

We needed to find the evidence before Scott and his men found it. If he did, the only thing left for him to do would be to kill us. Then, he’d be home free, and no one would be the wiser. But I was going to make sure that didn’t happen.

“Hold on tight.” I smiled over my shoulder as we started back.

As she wrapped her arms around me, we pulled onto the main highway, headed back to the city. It should be a lot better now. Less guarded. Also, we wouldn’t be sitting ducks in the encroaching darkness like we were in the daylight coming out here. So, we shouldn’t run into as much trouble now. I just hoped the same held true for her condo when we arrived. I’m sure they wouldn’t leave the place unguarded, which left us little choice but to find a way to sneak in. First, we needed to go shopping.

Since we had to leave the Gilded Cage so quickly, I didn’t have enough time to pick up my weapons at the front desk, which meant that I was currently unarmed. But I knew someone who could help. Someone I could trust. Also, he had told me once a long time ago that if I ever got into a jam, to come to him first.

After that, I’d get Tasha a hoodie and probably one for me, too. Even though it was an obvious disguise, it would at least deter snipers from spotting us right away. Nine chances out of ten, they wouldn’t take the shot unless they knew exactly who they were shooting at. No one, not even assassins, wanted to get civilians involved unless it was absolutely necessary.

Then my mind went back to Alyssa. I just hoped she wasn’t involved in this plot to kill the senator. Even though it was supposed to be a clean hit, it was as dirty as sin. But Alyssa had proven herself trustworthy to me more times than I could count.

In Mercs for Hire, we didn’t act like we knew each other on the street. It was a secret organization whose members stayed to themselves and out of each other’s business. It was how we stayed alive. The thing about MERCS was that someone you knew could be a member—an aunt, uncle, best friend—and you would never know unless they told you.
