~~ More about App reviews and Launching your App in Chapter 13 ~~
Good review sites versus the rest
Before trying to get reviews in any type of site, you need to have a clear understanding of what your end goal is. You may want to get traffic, social proof or brand awareness.
Depending on your objectives, you may design a different strategy to target bloggers, review sites or any type of online/offline media.
So letâs presume you want to focus on increasing your social proof and get more exposure. Then you can try to get your app reviews in sites that, although they may not have a lot of âapp users per se,â but may bring you nice solid industry credibility.
Quick Example:
You may have an app that educates people about the stock market. You could approach the financial editors of any local newspaper.
Although the readers of the newspaper are not going to automatically rush to the App store, being featured by a newspaper could help you to be featured by other publications in the same niche or industry.
Another approach is when you are looking to get traffic, not just social proof. Then you can contact a generic app review site, where they may already have a huge number of followers, traffic and engaged readers
The second approach is to reach generic app review sites with a lot of followers, traffic and already engaged users.
Now the difference is that app review sites usually get targeted by hundreds of app companies daily, and many sites tend to charge for reviewing apps or may have a huge backlog of apps to be reviewed.
Thinking out of the box
We all want our app be featured in the best app review sites, but what about small niche sites?
As with dating, it seems everyone wants to target the cheerleader while they forget about the other cute girls in town.
Niche sites can be a huge way to position your app in the right market and a lot of the time getting a review is easier because the local blogger or niche webmaster is less popular than the webmaster of an app review site.
Therefore, for the niche webmaster, an app review becomes a more exciting and unusual proposition.
Obviously the idea is to get as many reviews as possible, but at the same time you also have to live, eat and continue promoting your app and keep developing and providing support to your users.
So itâs not easy, right?
Thatâs why you have to be very specific when you target niche sites looking for reviews. You need to understand exactly what their target audience is, their popularity and their style. You may want to look at factors like:
How many Facebook followers they have?
How many twitter followers they have?
Their Google Page Rank?
Their ALEXA Ranking?
How many RSS subscribers they have?
