Chapter 7

The Volcano Uniform

Katia picked up a clipboard, some paper, and a pen from her work things. She sat down on the ground and started drawing.

Maurice sat beside her. The volcano growled and groaned. Maurice and Katia began brainstorming.

“The helmet is very important,” said Katia. She drew different shapes of helmets.

“It needs to be strong to protect you from whatever the volcano throws at you,” said Maurice.

Baz put his hands on his hips. “Excuse me,” he said. “What’s happening with the idea of getting closer to the volcano? We’re not really going to do that, right?”

“I am going closer to the volcano,” said Katia.

“That’s not good,” replied Baz. His heart started beating faster.

“How do you get closer to the volcano?” asked Asha. “The closer you go, the hotter it is. And there are rocks and ash blowing up all over the place.”

“That’s why Katia needs a volcano uniform,” said Maurice. He pointed to the clipboard.

“Nope. Nope.” Baz shook his head.

“We don’t all need to get closer to the volcano,” explained Katia. “Only me. I need to get closer.”

Baz felt better. His heart slowed down a little.

“Why you? Why not Maurice?” asked Asha.

“The plan is that I go because I take the volcano measurements,” said Katia. “Maurice’s job is to film it. He’s making a volcano movie.”

Maurice tapped his video camera. “We can show the world what an active volcano looks like,” he said. “That’s why Katia’s volcano uniform is important.”

He pointed to the clipboard. Asha and Baz bent to see.

Katia had drawn different versions of her volcano uniform.

“It looks like different kinds of space suits,” said Asha.

Baz thought for a minute. “You will need protection against the heat,” he said.

“Yes,” said Katia.

“And protection against things hitting you,” said Asha.

“And I will need my full body covered,” Katia said, making notes.

“And a mask,” said Maurice.

“No mask,” said Katia. She shook her head at her husband. “I can’t have my face covered. I’ll need to see where I’m walking.”

“No, nothing covering your vision,” said Maurice. “Think of a car’s windshield. It covers the car window so birds don’t go inside but you can still see out.”

“Birds don’t go into cars,” laughed Katia. Asha and Baz laughed too.

“Well, of course they don’t. The windshield keeps them out.” Maurice laughed too. He started looking through their bags and gear. “I have some special blankets and gloves that won’t catch fire. And a hard hat.” He took things out of the backpacks. He put the gear in piles.

Together, the group got to work creating a volcano uniform for Katia. Asha and Baz took the gloves out of the package. Maurice built a helmet using the hard hat. Katia cut pieces of the fire-proof blankets to make pants and a jacket.

The volcano bubbled behind them.

Once in a while, Maurice would have Katia try on the helmet. He made adjustments each time she tried it on. At first, it was too heavy. Next, too wide. Finally, it fit well.

The air was getting hotter. It smelled like old milk that was heated up.
