1. The Mughal Emperor Akbar (1542-1605) probably had dyslexia, which made reading hard for him. Despite this, he loved books and had people read to him. He also had stories written down and decorated with pictures, like the Baburnama, a book about his family; the Tutinama ‘Tales of the Parrot’ about a gossiping parrot who causes trouble; and the Razmnama, a book explaining the myths and beliefs of the Hindu people he ruled.

2. The zenana was the part of a house where the women in a Muslim family lived in the Indian subcontinent. In Emperor Akbar’s household, the zenana was huge, with over 5,000 noble women and servants! Akbar was the only man allowed to go inside.

3. During the Mughal Dynasty, women called urdubegis were trained to protect the Emperor and the women in the zenana. They were warriors chosen from different places, like Kashmir, Turkey and Africa. Some were bought as slaves and trained to fight using weapons like bows and lances. The Emperor spent a lot of time in the zenana, so the urdubegis also protcted him.

Archers shot from platforms mounted on elephants and generals rode elephants so they could oversee the battle. They hauled cannon and rockets to the battlefield.
