Reaming for Oversize Pin or Discs With so many size variations it would be uneconomic to have a range of piloted reamers to cover every eventuality – unless you were specializing only in a certain make, in which case it is a fine method of doing the job. The most frequently used tool is an adjustable reamer and three or four sizes are sufficient to cover most of this sort of work.

Once the pin or disc is removed, the reamer can be entered in the now-vacant hole, nipped up until it just bites, then run right through. It is then reset in the hole and the process is repeated. It sounds as if it should not work but it does, and remarkably well at that. It is important where hinge discs are fitted to ensure the reamer is supported through both sides of the action and always worthwhile after a cut reversing the reamer to come back from the other side.

With a pressed-in pin or discs there has to be an interference fit to prevent movement. Realistically, size for size will provide this but having the reamed hole 0.005in (0.125mm) smaller than the mating part will boost the confidence further. When pressing hinge discs into over-and-unders it can be done in a vice, but the thin walls of the side of the action will need to be supported with a tight-fitting hardwood block.
