Chapter Ten

“Hey, Fifi,” Marty said as soon as I answered his call.

“Hi,” I managed, all the while still reminding myself to breathe in deeply.

“I, uh, I wanted to give you a call to see if you had a couple minutes?”

I was just about a couple minutes from Roy’s. “Sure.”

“Remember how I mentioned I wanted… your advice?” Marty continued.

“Yes.”

“Well, I wanted to reach out before we get together tonight… with everyone else around, I mean…”

“Okay.” I inhaled deeply and tried to keep the succubus subdued, tried to keep her from completely taking over my body.

We’re almost there, I said to myself. Almost there.

“Um, hmm…” Marty said and then grew quiet for a second. “I just wanted to get your advice on where Poppy is or… where she might be… with our relationship.”

“Oh,” I started, surprised and even though the succubus was still railing within me, it was actually a good thing I was on the phone with Marty because the conversation was giving me another outlet for my thoughts.

“It’s just… we agreed we’re a couple, you know?” Marty started.

“Okay.”

“But, she doesn’t really act like we are. Whenever I see her, she treats me like the friend she’s always treated me. I mean, I know it’s sometimes hard to make the jump from friends to a relationship, but it seems like I’ve made the jump a lot better than she has.” He paused for a moment. “I just thought I’d ask you if you… um, had, maybe heard anything from her? Like maybe she’d talked to you about it?”

“Um, no, Poppy doesn’t seem to like to talk about her personal life too much.”

“Right,” he answered. “Does it seem weird to you… what I just said?”

I took a deep breath as I turned down Roy’s street. “I think maybe she just needs time?” I answered. I breathed in deeply for a count of three and then exhaled for another count of three.

“Right… time.”

“Maybe she’s just scared about ruining your friendship by taking things to the next level?”

“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking,” Marty answered. “I’m going to give her the time she needs then. Thanks, Feef.”

“You’re welcome,” I said and when I pulled up to Roy’s house, his truck was already in the driveway.

Relieved, I parked and then said my goodbyes to Marty, who seemed pleased enough with our conversation. I didn’t imagine I’d really helped him at all, but sometimes people just need to get stuff off their chests and they end up making themselves feel better.

Regardless, I jumped out of my car and hurried to the front door, my heart pounding all the way. I still felt breathless and my anxiety was piqued, but I wasn’t sure if that was owing to my insatiable need to feed or from what had just happened with Tobias.

I didn’t even have to knock on Roy’s door. As soon as I reached the top porch step, he pulled open the door and there was concern in his features.

“Fifi, are you okay?” he demanded immediately. “What’s going on?”

I couldn’t speak, couldn’t think, and didn’t want to.
