In the wee hours of the morning sometime before dawn, Kenzie opened her eyes. For a moment, she didn’t know where she was and it frightened her. Her body was sweaty and she felt an odd sense of fear but she couldn’t remember dreaming.

She moved her head and saw Arrow beside her. He was sound asleep so it hadn’t been him who disturbed her. She laid there listening to the sounds of the night. The wind blew outside but inside there wasn’t any odd sounds to contend with.

The clock struck four chimes in the living room and she knew if there was something wrong, the dog would alert them. She closed her eyes again, and tried to slip back into sleep but her errant thoughts wouldn’t let her.

Easing away from Arrow, she got out of bed quietly. When she reached the other side, she saw Blaze raise his head and look at her but he laid his head down again and didn’t stir.

Kenzie put her robe on and went out into the living room. The air was chilled from the night so she made her way over to the fireplace. Without turning the lights on, she lit the kindling and watched the fire take. Adding a couple bigger pieces of wood to it, she went over to the sofa and sat down. The decanter of whisky was still there so she poured herself a glass and sat back. Watching the fire burn relaxed her, almost lulling her into a state of heavy sedation.

In the flames, she could almost hear someone calling out to her.

Kenzie frowned and listened carefully. Then a face appeared in the flames and as she watched the fire, she could almost see the woman trying to say something. Kenzie frowned and concentrated but she still couldn’t hear the words the other woman was saying. She shook her head. “I don’t understand.” Closing her eyes, she concentrated and finally heard her voice. It was barely above a whisper but she could hear it. Opening her eyes, she saw the woman in the flames.

“Can you hear me?” she said.

Kenzie nodded.

“Good, I want you to pass along a message for me. I want you to tell Arrow he has to find me. He has to find the place I’m buried. I need him to take me home. Tell him Leo may have watched me die but Ben is responsible for my death.”

Kenzie replied to this, “I think he knows that.”

“What he doesn’t know is that my child was born before I died. Ben allowed me to live long enough for her to be born. Arrow needs to find my daughter and take her to her grandfather.”

Kenzie frowned. “But Leo said you died shortly after you came here to join Ben.”

The woman in the fire shook her head, sparks flew everywhere. “Leo must have lied. He didn’t want anyone to know, about me or my child. He’d do anything to protect Ben. Ben was surprised when I told him about the baby but he believed me when I told him the baby was his.
