People with liver diseases need to avoid clove (bud and leaf), garlic, oregano, sassafras, thyme and vetiver.

There are numerous other contraindications for various health conditions. If you have any long-lasting or chronic health issues, consult a doctor prior to using essential oils. Other safety tips you should know are:

Never put oils directly into your eyes, nose or ears. Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching your contact lens if you have oil on your fingers. Some oils can damage contact lens, as well as highly irritate the eyes.

Never put undiluted oil directly on the skin unless it is one of the few oils specifically labeled for such use.

Never put undiluted essential oils directly in your bath water - always use some type of bath base to disperse the oils first.

Be aware that some essential oils can cause sensitivity to sunlight or intense lighting - be sure you check the label!

Never store or use essential oils near electricity, open flames or sparks. Some of them are flammable and can catch on fire. If a fire does break out, use vegetable oil to put it out- water will just make it spread more, since essential oils are oil-soluble and not water-soluble.

Never blindly follow someone else’s recipe or formula - always ensure the recipe is adapted to your specific uniqueness.

Never use essential oils to treat a specific ailment until you have completed a full assessment of the person being treated. This assessment must include mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health status, as well as environmental, genetic and past medical history factors.

Always keep the phone number of a licensed healthcare practitioner handy in case of emergencies

Always keep excellent records of which oils and scents you have experimented with and what your reactions have been. You will not regret doing this!
