Yacht Wreck North Sentinel Island Andaman Islands, India

Pritam cocked an ear and tossed the gold bar onto the sand with a thud. “Silence!”

His excited men, all holding gold bars found in a flooded hold, fell silent, the gunfire he thought he had heard in the distance now distinct. “Shasi’s in trouble!” He pointed toward the forest. “Let’s go!”

Gold bars dropped all around him and they raced into the forest and the darkness to save their comrade. He wasn’t worried about the gold—it would be there when they got back. There was no one to take it. All he cared about right now was finding the bastards responsible for their current situation. If those Americans hadn’t stolen the gold and put it on their boat, none of them would be here now. They would be safely back home, counting their riches.

Though deep down, he knew that wasn’t true. The tsunami they were hit by definitely also hit the island he called home, and if that were the case, they might have died if they had been outside and exposed. He frowned as he charged through the trees toward the cliff face he was convinced was hiding those he sought. His home might be gone, his friends dead, and when this was all over, they might have nothing to go back to. But that gold could change things. If he wanted to be worshiped, then rebuilding his neighborhood was one way to guarantee it.

The drums in the distance continued their pounding, reminding him of what that meant. If home were gone, there would be no one to search for them. They could be here for days, weeks, or months. He had checked the gash in the hull of the Americans’ boat, and it might be possible to repair it, but it would take time, and would be a risk to put out to sea.

A risk he wasn’t willing to take.

The safer bet was to build a boat or a raft of some sort to save themselves, but he was quite certain none of them had the knowledge. He smiled slightly, the drums suggesting a solution. The natives would know how. Surely, they had the expertise to build at least rafts, and would have the tools. When he was finished with the Americans, they would seek out the natives in the morning and force them to do their bidding.

As he sprinted through the trees, his mind raced with the possibilities. They could be here for some time. Once they subdued the natives then put them to work and exploited their resources, life here could perhaps be quite comfortable. A smile spread. In a place like this, he could be king. With the natives enslaved to do his bidding, he would be all-powerful. His heart slammed a little harder with the thought of it. Power, control, both men and women doing his bidding. The smile spread even further.

The women.

Perhaps escaping this place wasn’t the urgent necessity he had thought.
