Arizona has its own “Triassic Park,” actually the Petrified Forest National Park, where the remains of Triassic reptiles have been unearthed and ancient trees turned to stone 225 million years ago.

Winslow (928-289-2434; winslowarizona.org) itself, founded in 1881, has quite a history. Named for Gen. Edward F. Winslow, president of the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad, the community was raised on the three Rs: ranching, railroading, and Route 66. The Old Trails Historical Museum (212 N. Kinsley Ave.; 928-289-5861; oldtrailsmuseum.org) has displays of all three stages of the area’s history, as well as artifacts from the region’s Native American history. The museum is open Tues through Sat from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

No visit to Winslow is complete without a stroll over to the park to see the two-story mural at Standin’ on the Corner Park (standinonthecorner.com). The Glenn Frey/Jackson Browne song “Take It Easy”—recorded first by the Eagles on their debut album and later by Browne—recounts an incident that occurred in Flagstaff. It was just one of those youthful moments that Browne experienced, with a girl slowing down and catching the eye of the young balladeer. But Browne exercised a bit of poetic license (she was also driving, not a flatbed Ford, but a red Datsun). Somehow the line from that song, “Well, I’m standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona” resonated and turned this spot into one of the ultimate photo ops for Route 66 travelers. Murals on the wall recreate the scene, along with a bronze statue of a young guitar-toting troubadour leaning against the lamppost. And each and every day people stop to be part of it. The town estimates that more than 100,000 people visit the corner every year. After Glen Frey passed away in 2016, another bronze statue bearing his likeness was added to the plaza. In September, the town holds the Standin’ on the Corner Park Festival, which features food, fun, classic cars and Eagles tribute bands. Any guesses on the most requested song?
