Chapter 11

MARChad a hard time looking Adenet in the eye the next morning. Between running into him naked and then the dreams that had haunted him all night, he was acutely aware of the other man’s presence, but he was afraid he would give away every thought in his head if he met Adenet’s eyes.

His deep brown eyes the color of chocolate fondue….

Merde, he had it bad. “So what’s the plan for today?” he asked, determined to keep things as normal as possible.

“You wanted to see the den,” Adenet replied. “I thought we would hike there this morning so you can do what you need to do before it gets too late. You don’t want to be traipsing around in the woods after dark.”

“I doubt anything in the woods would go up against you,” Marc said. He dared a glance in Adenet’s direction as he spoke. “I saw you in your wolf form. Unless it was another wolf, maybe, nothing would stand a chance against you.”

It must have been a trick of the light, but Marc swore Adenet’s eyes changed color at his words, lightening to almost amber before returning to their usual dark brown.

“There are wild boars in the woods,” Adenet said. “As a pack, we could bring one down, but I wouldn’t want to face one alone.”

“Do you hunt larger game as a pack?” Marc asked, smiling as Adenet handed him a cup of coffee. He took a sip and sighed in pleasure at the dark, rich taste.

“Sometimes,” Adenet said. “Usually to mark a special occasion. A mating or something like that.”

“I don’t want to be presumptuous, but wouldn’t it help morale if you hunted together more often?”

“What does morale have to do with it?” Adenet asked. “Maybe nothing,” Marc said, “but magic doesn’t happen in a void. Even a wizard who points a wand and casts a spell is influenced by his or her physical and emotional state. It stands to reason that anything that might improve the cohesiveness of the pack could also improve your physical and emotional states as you begin the fertility ritual. What should be a joyful occasion has become a painful one. That can’t be good for the outcome of the next one. If you can do something to increase everyone’s optimism, maybe that will help.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then you’ll have had a good hunt,” Marc said. “It’s a good thing in and of itself, isn’t it?” Adenet nodded slowly. “I’ll speak with Lorens when we get back from the den.”

Marc finished his coffee quickly and took his cup to the sink. “I’m ready when you are.” Adenet looked pointedly at Marc’s shoes. “Those will be ruined in five minutes. Do you have any boots?”

“Not that I brought with me,” Marc said. “I could go get them. A couple of spells and I could be there and back in no time. If that won’t make you uncomfortable, I mean. I wouldn’t want to cast a spell here without your permission.”

The thought made Adenet distinctly uncomfortable, but he didn’t say that to Marc.
