When Ari entered his house, his mother called out, “Is that you, Ari?”

“Yes, Ma, it’s me.”

“You sound tired, dear. Was the planting too much for you today?”

“I’M OKAY!” he shouted, adding, “I think I’ll go to my room and lie down.”

Dvora didn’t like what she heard. She went to his room. Ari was on his bed fully clothed. He hadn’t even taken off his shoes. Dvora carefully removed them and then felt his forehead. It felt hot. She became quite concerned. “You may have a fever, son,” she said.

“I’LL BE OKAY! I SAID!”

Dvora had never heard her son raise his voice at her, nor sound so angry. She suspected something was wrong. “Alright, rest my child, and I will ask Dr. Shlomo to look at you as soon as he can.”

It didn’t take long for Ari to fall asleep. A ghostly image appeared in his dream, but this time it took the shape of an angel who spoke quietly to him.

“There are souls that are troubled and full of past sins. They are called dybbuks. They wander the world freely in order to find a resting place. These spirits look for human bodies to enter. If the human is evil, the dybbuk influences that evil and is punished constantly. When the dybbuk enters an innocent and good person’s body and tries to encourage evil the good person can only be evil if the dybbuk is successful. If the dybbuk can’t encourage evil in the good person the dybbuk must leave and find another body.”

The angel’s soft, soothing voice seemed to bring Ari some comfort. The voice continued. “You will not feel any discomfort or understand what has happened. Just realize that you will be made stronger through your goodness. Try to rest now.”

There was a short silence and soon Ari fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
