After the success of my initial paranormal investigation, it was suggested that they be opened up to the general public and held on a monthly basis.
It wasn’t long before they took on a life of their own.
Simply by word of mouth, my monthly all night investigations within Ye Olde Man & Scythe and Ye Old Wench & Trinkets were completely booked. They were one of the most popular activities in town. We used tape recorders, digital cameras, and observed live footage from the night vision CCTV. I brought a whole host of original Spiritualist paraphernalia from the past to conduct experiments and hold séance communications with the spirit world.
If I had read about it, I would experiment with it. I soon discovered what worked well and what didn’t.
We would meet late, around 10:30 in the evening, starting the first part of the investigation in the shop as the other side of the building was a working public house and their hours extended to midnight. After midnight, we would leave Ye Olde Wench & Trinkets and enter Ye Old Man & Scythe.
At the start of each investigation, we headed upstairs to my office. As we stood in a circle, I asked people what feelings they had, what they sensed. Everyone was encouraged to take photos or videos, whatever they wanted. Many spirit lights would show up in the photos.
During the investigation, I always made a point of explaining to everyone that the spirit people who were most likely to make an appearance were their own family members. I encouraged them to speak to them just as they always would, when they are addressed this way, their interaction is far more likely.
We are always surrounded by the spirits of our family and friends, and they enjoy having that connection with us as we go about our daily activities.
Back downstairs was a fairy room. Not real fairies, mind you. It was just a room full of fairies, everywhere. Some in glass jars. Some extended from the ceiling. There were hundreds of them hanging from strings. Many people experienced feelings in that room, ghostly memories still present from long ago. It was also quite common to hear footsteps and bangs coming from upstairs whilst standing in the fairy room.
In the case of a building like Ye Olde Man & Scythe, there is great potential for a whole range of supernatural occurrences to take place. One, because of the sheer number of years that it has stood on that location for, and because of the tense and dramatic history that is has. James Stanley the 7th Earl of Derby spent his last moments in Ye Olde Man & Scythe immediately prior to his execution on October 15th 1651.
The more emotionally charged a memory is, the more likely its ghost will replay.
As a public house, frequented daily by living members of the public, this particular building has the potential for a lot of spirit connection too, and not just the ones behind the bar!
For our supernatural investigations, Ye Olde Man & Scythe provided the perfect location.
