Telling the truth
Telling the truth to others comes with responsibility. Telling the truth is also concerned with speaking from the heart, rather than the head. You may have heard people stridently proclaiming, ‘I always tell the truth. I tell it like it is.’ This stance is sometimes an excuse for being tactless – as if the truth is all that matters. How you tell the truth is vitally important, as we need to be sensitive to other people’s feelings. Telling them the truth could do them no good at all if they are left feeling confused and hurt. Your intention toward that person is very important. I often liken this to buying someone a present because you have to, rather than because you want to. As far as Spirit are concerned, this is a waste of a gift. When you spontaneously buy a friend a present to cheer them up because you want to, Spirit hear you because your actions speak from the heart, not the head. The gift is appreciated, and heartfelt.
An angry mother often speaks from the head rather than her heart, because she is frustrated with her child. With my own children, I tried to speak to them from the heart as much as possible, explaining to them the consequences of their actions. It doesn’t matter how young the children are, because when you speak from the heart they will always understand your intentions. But if you speak, or shout, from your head, children switch off. I always try to explain the head-heart difference to my clients and workshop students, because the definition of each is not really what you would expect. We associate calm logic with the head and emotional outbursts from the heart, when in fact it’s the other way around. Talking from the heart tends to be thoughtful. It has its own logic, which is tempered by sensitivity, whereas speaking from the head often results in anger or frustration.
In fact, the head and the heart can speak the same truth; it is just expressed differently – it’s not what you say, but how you say it. If I feel angry or wound up, I take a few deep breaths and connect with my heart centre to find stillness (see the chakra exercise, page 35). Then I can speak the same truth, but with more kindness. It doesn’t mean that I go through life trying to please others the whole time, but I do try to speak from the heart. It is not always easy, because at times my mind jumps in ahead of me, but I know that speaking from the heart brings me a sense of deep relaxation.
