Chapter Sixteen

Melissa took the lead, taking the group back into the thin cover of the tree line. Grace and Ingrid joined the middle of the formation while Apollo and Eve brought up the rear. The warrior paused frequently to scan the surrounding area. The upgraded Soldierbots might not show up on his sensors, but there were still Skins, Spiders, and even worse things to worry about. Hopefully the software updates weren’t for all of DANA’s army.

Although Apollo had just threatened her, it didn’t seem to bother Eve. As they walked, she told him about Serge’s story. How he had given a brave, flattering version initially, only to admit it was a lie once Eve forced him to admit the truth.

“Serge not having the courage to look for his wife once the war began doesn’t surprise me in the least,” Apollo said. He was stopped again, resting on one knee while BB scanned for any radio signals. “What does surprise me is that he found the courage to go on this mission.”

“Yes,” Eve said, “it’s interesting, isn’t it? Perhaps the weight of his guilt has finally pushed the cowardice far enough down.”

“No signals detected,” BB chirped in Apollo’s ear.

“How long do you think it will last?” Eve asked, glancing over at Apollo as he got back to his feet.

“What’s that?” he asked, as they started moving again.

“Serge’s new found courage,” Eve said.

“Maybe he never found it,” Apollo said. Eve raised an eyebrow and he explained further. “He hasn’t really been in direct danger out here yet. Let’s see what happens the first time lasers are firing over his head. People bluster all the time; it isn’t until they are actually faced with a threat to their life that you see who they really are. Avenging his wife is what a hero in one of his stories would do. The question is, what will happen when he is finally faced with how difficult that vengeance will be to achieve?”

Eve nodded knowingly. “Yes,” she said, “I suppose only time will tell us if Serge is ready to become the man he thinks he is.”

Apollo abruptly stopped again, going to a knee and holding up a hand. He thought he had heard a slight humming noise. The sound of something mechanical.

Eve brought her laser rifle up and started scanning the area like Apollo was. The night was quiet. Some insects chirped and chattered away in the grass. A strong breeze rustled the dead leaves on the ground.

Apollo whispered to BB again. “BB, enhance audio to maximum.” The night vision dimmed slightly as power was sent to a different component of the Exosuit. On the right side of his visor, he saw a visual depiction of his audio controls. The little bar moved slowly to the top.

The insects were suddenly like a team of construction workers pounding jackhammers against concrete. The rustling leaves were like giant stones being grated against each other.

“BB, just enhance the range, not the volume,” Apollo said, grinding his teeth in frustration.
