Once you see the previous screenshot, you are already set to use SSL in your application. You will need to navigate your browser to the application with the SSL port configured previously; in our example, it is 8443. Your browser will complain about an unsigned certificate of an unknown source. After accepting it, you'll have the login prompt from your authentication WAR file.

The next step is importing the client certificate. It is also possible to connect to the server with a signed client certificate. The client needs to do the same as has been done for the server—create a self-signed certificate. This certificate needs to be imported to the keystore of the server so that the server knows which certificate to accept. This can be done as follows: keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore server.jks -storepass password -alias clientkey -file client.cer
