Chapter 10
The festivities went on throughout the day and the better part of the night. The huge, frosted white Christmas tree with the sparkling angel on the top was lit, much to the children’s and adults' delight. Lights blazed from every branch and tinsel, frosted angels, as well as red green and white bulbs added their dazzling colors to the mix. Camellia stood in the secure circle of her husband’s arms, ensconced in the black cashmere coat he'd given her for the holidays and stared at the mesmerizing lights, feeling the excitement the season always brought her. It was their second Christmas together and later, when they went back to the mansion, they would have the house to themselves as the staff had been given the time off. Including the nurse who would be back the second day of January. Her mother and several of the wives and their husbands who were members of the club had stopped by for a few hours but had already left. Camellia felt full and content and a feeling of goodwill settled around her. She'd donated hundreds of toys and gifts to her usual charitable organization and felt secure in the knowledge that she'd done her part. She was also trying to tell herself that there was absolutely nothing to worry about with the slightly disturbing fan letters that had started coming back. Her agent had called her with the news and had sent them to her. Apparently her leaving the series hadn't sat well with him. She'd told Sally that she wasn't worried, but she wondered who she was kidding. She had her pregnancy to think about and Dr. Miller had told her that she should do her best to minimize stress. If she opened her mouth and said anything to Anthony he was going to freak out and she didn't want that.
“Okay,” he whispered in her ear. “I think it's time we took our leave. You must be tired.”
She leaned back against him. “A little bit but not the unpleasant kind. I'm just sorry I didn't get to have any of the eggnog. I understand that Maribel Lyons make the best kind.”
“I had enough for both of us,” he teased her.
“Not helping.” He winced as she poked him in the ribs. “Remember last Christmas?”
“You mean the fact that you dragged me all over the place looking for the perfect lights to put on the tree you had in the living room.” He took her hand as they walked away from the scene. People were still mingling around and chatting even though the hour had gotten quite late. Christmas songs were now playing from a laptop that someone had hooked up to speakers and the sound of Mariah Carey’s beautiful voice trilled out ‘Silver Bells’.
“You lifted me so that I could put the star onto the tree.” She put her hand through his arm and snuggled, loving the scent and feel of him. He was wearing faded jeans and a thick white sweater, and over it a long black cashmere jacket she'd given him for the holidays.
