Chapter 15

It was almost two in the morning. Abby was resting as comfortably as she could with her minor injuries. Sam was asleep in the uncomfortable chair she pulled up next to the hospital bed. Their hands were clasped and were dreaming of better times. For the nurse, it was a day when they could be together and not fear attack or pain. For the detective, it was taking her girlfriend away from everything and raising their son together.

A man, only three inches taller than Abby and three inches shorter than Sam, stood in the doorway. He knew he was not supposed to be there at night. He also knew the raven haired woman was not either. This strange woman was close to being the petite blonde’s spouse. The thought caused the man to shudder. It was going to some doing to overcome his prejudices.

The man wanted to overcome them. Looking back at his daughter’s childhood, he knew it had not been pleasant. Her early years, he hoped, had been happy as he spoiled her. He also knew he was not home as often as was needed. The teen years were a nightmare. If he and his wife had supported Abby and not been judgmental, perhaps they would have a closer relationship. Perhaps he wouldn’t have found out about his daughter’s attack from one of the board members.

Blue eyes blinked open. Even in the darkness, the coldness shown through. An involuntary reaction caused him to take a step into the hallway. Sam shifted in the chair revealing something that caused the man’s breath to catch. It was a gun encased in a shoulder holster. His bluish-green eyes stared at the cold steel before managing to look back into the glacial blue eyes.

The deep husky voice barely above a whisper surprised the man. While the woman was tall and muscular, he never would have expected that tone of voice. “Can I help you with something?” Once again the man was weary as a hand went to the side arm. He knew she was being protective. It was literally scaring him to death. The eyes squinted, causing a sad smile of recognition. “You’re Mr. Ivy.”

The man swallowed hard, deciding it was a peace offering of sorts. Reinforcing it was, the hand retreated from the firearm. He made his way cautiously until he was about a foot away from the hospital bed. “I’m Ethan Ivy.” The blue eyes softened a little. “You’re Samantha Walker. You are my daughter’s…” Though he knew, it was hard for him to verbalize.

Lucky for him, Sam took pity. She realized how difficult it must have been to attempt reconciliation. It saddened her it appeared Abby’s mother had decided not to do the same. “I’m Abby’s girlfriend.” Carefully, she removed her hand from the grasp of her soulmate and stood. “You do know it’s after hours.” His answer to her was a questioning look. “It’s good to be a cop sometimes.”

A small chuckle escaped the extremely nervous man. He watched Sam stretched.
