The Truth

“Where’s who?” Finn asks innocently.

“The fairy,” Jack replies, looking up at the sky. “Only magic could make me skate this well. Plus, I saw the glow around my skates.”

Finn shrugs and says, “It wasn’t a fairy—it was me.”

Jack laughs. “I know it wasn’t you,” he tells Finn.

Finn just grins and nods his head. Bella and I nod our heads, too.

“But . . . how?” Jack asks, sounding totally confused. “How did you do it?”

“With magic,” Finn replies. “Finn is just my nickname. My real name is actually Griffin, Griffin Dillon.”

Jack opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. He just stares at Finn. Then he looks over at Bella and me. “Did you two already know this?” We nod our heads. Jack looks back at Finn. “Do my parents know?”

“I’m sure they know by now,” Finn answers.

“Well . . . this is just the coolest thing ever!” Jack exclaims. “Griffin Dillon is one of my best friends!” He pauses for a few seconds, then says, “Although, if it’s okay with you, can I keep calling you Finn?”

“Absolutely. I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Finn agrees.

“Alright then, let’s go skating!” Jack cries, gliding towards the trees.

I’m about to follow him when a loud chirping noise fills the air. The red bird from town flutters down and lands on the ice. In the blink of an eye the bird transforms into Riley, who is already wearing skates and a helmet.

“It’s about time Griffin told you his secret,” Riley says. “I’ve been waiting and waiting to join in the fun.”

Of course! Now I understand why Finn was winking at us earlier. Riley was the little red bird.

“Try to catch me,” Jack calls, as he skates towards the trees. The rest of us take off after him.

For the next twenty minutes, we follow the ice path through the thick forest. We skate over bridges and down tiny hills. We zig zag around evergreen branches that stretch halfway across the ice.

As I pass by a particularly large tree, I slow down and pick up an evergreen needle that’s fallen onto the ice. It rolls easily between my fingers, which means it’s a spruce needle. Spruce trees have needles with four sides, so they roll easily. Fir tree needles are flat and don’t roll very well.

Bella comes to a stop beside me. “The ice rinks at home are going to seem really boring after today.”

“They definitely are,” I agree. “Also, we’d never see that at home.”

I point at Finn and Riley, who are having a conversation with a couple of deer. Everyone in Finn’s magical family can talk to animals.

Jack skates over to joins us. After observing Finn for a minute, Jack says, “What I don’t understand is, why didn’t Finn tell me his secret sooner?”

“Do you remember when Finn first came to the village?” I ask him.

Jack nods his head.

“Finn came to the village because he wanted to be treated like a regular kid,” I explain. “If he’d told you he was Griffin Dillon, you would have treated him differently.
