âWhat do you wish most to know?â
I fidgeted under the gorgeous gaze of an angel who had once been my fatherâs companion. âDid my father become human for my mother or because his soul was corrupted?â
She hummed lightly and eased forward with a cup held in both hands. âThatâs a difficult question to answer. Your father discarded his wings, but not for your mother and not for the corruption of his soul. Yes, he felt responsible for her, and yes he appeased his tainted soul by discarding his angel wings, but...â She inhaled a small breath. âThe reason he became human was much simpler.â
I waited with bated breath as the woman who was one of the most gorgeous creatures Iâd ever seen struggled with what to say next.
âHe did it for you.â
âMe?â
âYour conception was unprecedented and understandably unexpected. The corruption of his soul encouraged the event of it, if you gather my meaning, and your fatherâs deepest wish was to protect you. But with his corruption growing, he had no other choice but to do so as human.â
I swallowed, unable to digest it all. âAnd when he went away?â
âHe and I remained in contact. What would ultimately lead to his death was everything to do with a connection he shared with Asmodeus.â I stayed silent. âAsmodeus was once an angel,â she said in a low voice, one that I almost missed. âHe is your fatherâs brother.â
What?! As in, my uncle? Gross.
âDoes Cain know?â
âHe doesnât,â she said, eyeing the door. It was clear now why she ensured we were alone and the muted barrier was in place. âFor reasons, he must never be told.â
Could I possibly keep it from him?
Nessa set down her cup and reached for me. âI wonât force you to keep it to yourself, but Iâd advise against disclosing it to him. At least right now. With your relationship what it is, it would destroy Cain. You must understand that even your father kept it from Cain because he knew what it would do to their relationship. While Cain may forgive the blood relation, we canât know how it might affect him. Because, if the connection was discovered, Cain may equate his familyâs death because of your fatherâs connection to his mother. It was, after all, the very reason Asmodeus knew of her existence. Every angel corrupted or killed by Asmodeus...your father was always the common denominator, and he carried that burden for a long time.â
Was that the reason he took Cain as his own?
As if hearing my thoughts, Nessa went on, âCain may think the reason Samuelâs took care of him was because guilt. Thatâs why your father never said anything. More than anger, more than disgust, Samuel feared Cain would think all his actions were because of guilt and not out of genuine love. And the longer he kept it a secret, the harder it was to disclose it.â
âArenât you afraid heâll find out and resent you for keeping it from him?â
âI do,â she replied candidly.
