Marco had been a police officer for almost two years when he was viciously attacked by a parolee on a routine enforcement stop at a convenience store.

“Although he was on parole and had been strictly ordered to stay off drugs and alcohol, I could tell that he was high the second I approached him at the store where he had been causing trouble,” Marco said. “He just went wild, crazy, and he attacked me the second I approached him.”

The thug smashed a liquor bottle in the officer’s face.

“Somehow, I was able to stay on my feet,” Marco said. “I dragged the man outside and fell against a wall, but I managed to keep my balance. My face was cut up from the broken bottle, and I was bleeding profusely from my right eye.”

All around him, Officer Marco could hear the jeers and curses that encouraged the big parolee to stomp the policeman into the street. One of his greatest fears was that the street punks would decide to join in the fight on his opponent’s side and participate in the gang killing of a cop. The hoodlum was taller and a lot heavier than Marco, and he was also a veteran street fighter—he certainly didn’t need any help from the thugs who cheered him on.

Marco knew that he was getting the worst of it, and the steady flow of blood from his eye blinded him so he could not always see his attacker.

“I would take a punch and swing in the direction that the blow had come from,” Marco said. “I was determined to keep on fighting, regardless of the odds against me.”

Marco had heard a weather report on the squad-car radio as he had driven to pick up the parolee: It was 106 degrees that day. He had planned to give the man a stern talking to about his public behavior in as little time as possible, then get back into his air-conditioned vehicle. Now, it seemed that he had been fighting the big man, who was crazed by drugs and alcohol, in the heat of a blast furnace for an hour or more.

Marco had taken one vicious punch after another, and he felt that he was losing. Unable to see his opponent, he grabbed him and tried to hold him close so he could not launch his punches with such power.

“That was when I heard the voice inside my head telling me to ask God and my guardian angel for help,” Marco said. “Everything had happened so fast, I had not even had time to pray for God’s help. With all my soul, I asked God to let me end this terrible fight and to let me go home to my wife and little son.”

Marco had seen that friends of the thug had prevented the convenience-store employee from calling the police to bring him assistance, but now, out of his one good eye, he saw a big man walk up to the patrol car and shout into the radio that an officer was down and needed immediate help.
